About Guts and Seeds
Where kids learn
to carve
Guts and Seeds exists to build kids' confidence and foster a growth mindset — through pumpkin carving. When kids do something they didn't think they could do, they wow their family, their neighbors, and themselves.
How it started
From a TV ending credit to 30 years of carving
It started with the ending credits of a Halloween episode of Roseanne. Portraits of the cast, carved into pumpkins. Jeremy Burghall was ten years old. He thought, I want to try that. And that was it.
Year after year, hundreds of trick-or-treaters stopped to admire the pumpkins at his parents’ house in New Westminster, BC. What started as curiosity became craft. What became craft eventually became something he needed to share.
In 2006, Jeremy and a couple of friends created Pumpkinshop — one of the first programs of its kind for converting photos into pumpkin carving stencils.
Twenty years later, he rebuilt that vision from the ground up as Pumpkin Studio. A purpose-built tool for turning any image into a pumpkin carving stencil that any kid can follow and carve.
Along the way, he wrote The Ultimate Book on Pumpkin Carving — 64 chapters covering every technique, every tool, and all nine carving styles. The book that teaches what no one else was teaching: that anyone can do this, and kids can do it especially well.
That’s what Guts and Seeds is. A brand built on the belief that carving an impressive pumpkin — one that makes people stop and stare — is something any kid can learn to do.
In the classroom and the community
Hundreds of kids. One pumpkin at a time.
Over the years, Guts and Seeds has brought pumpkin carving into schools across Greater Vancouver — from elementary to high school. Teaching kids that the impressive pumpkins they admired outside were something they could make themselves.
The results spoke for themselves. Kids who had never carved anything walked away with portraits that stopped people in their tracks. Confidence built through competence, one pumpkin at a time.
Guts and Seeds also organized large-scale carving displays through the Burnaby Halloween Festival — events featuring hundreds of pumpkins carved by students themselves. A celebration of what kids can do when someone shows them how.
Our pumpkins have been featured on CBC, CTV, Global, Citytv, Breakfast Television, and The Vancouver Sun.
